i have recently purchased a new motherboard with the FX8320, the problem here is : (please follow me carefully :p)
- when i place my 4Gb in single channel mode BUT in the last slot \"from the CPU and go on), the config seems be working fine with no problems at all.
- when i place my 4Gb memory in the 3rd slot, the pc boots normally BUT it reboots after awhile (when gaming or using resource intensive programs).
- when i place my 4Gb memory in the 2nd slot, the PC boots BUT it does'nt last long before the reboot problem strikes again !!
- when i place my 4Gb in the first slot, the PC doesn\'t boot at all, no matter what i try, it gives me no bios or whatever !!
now this is the tricky part, when i activate the dual channel ( putting 2x same memory stick \"ADATA btw\"), the PC boots normally, BUT ,boom, it began its restart loop problem
please help me, I've tried every thing, i am actually in Algeria, and the tek service is so BAD, and i cant afford another mobo for the moment ( i am a jobless poor young man ^^)
OH yeah another problem i am facing, the OCII genie functionality is NOT working !!
PS:I've posted this Q on MSi forums 4 days ago, and it seems that nobody there :p
my rig:
CPU FX8320
GC HD 6870
PSU 4 yrs old coolermaster 400W
MoBo FX990A GD65
Memories 2x ADATA 1600

On that board, the slots are numbered in this order (starting with the slot closest to the CPU): #1, #3, #2 & #4

If you're using only 1 stick of RAM, the manual says only put it in slot #1. If you're using dual-channel mode, you install both sticks in slots #1 & 2; only use #3 & #4 if you have 4 sticks of RAM (with #1 & #2 having matching sizes, & #3 & #4 having matching sizes).

If you continue to have problems, & it happens with different RAM sticks, you'll probably have to contact MSI about the board & possibly have it RMA'd.

Thank you brother, but what you've said is totally the contrary of what i am experiencing.. let me get it straight. If i place the memory stick in the 1st slot, the pc wont boot at all (no bios), but if i place it in the 4th it boots normally without issues. Its like your solution but in inverse :D
Thank you brother !

Might be a number of things, boot with the stick in the last slot and go into BIOS, check the DRAM voltage and set it manually to 1.6, then find the CPU/NB voltage and set it to 1.2, save, exit, shutdown, now add the second stick in slot 2 (2nd from CPU) and give it a try....if no joy then woould ensure you have the latest BIOS, and try, if still no joy, hate to say it, but have a feeling you may have bent/broken pins on the CPU

Tradesman1, thanks for your reply. Actually i left my pc to the shop for diagnostics, they have there tools (ram, psus..) so they can test it.
Man it sucks, its been only 1 week after my purchase and here i am with some doubts about a broken CPU.

it turns out that DIMM1 in that board was inverted ( DIMM4 is the first slot the closest to the CPU), that's why my PC wont boot when i put the memory stick on that slot... that's at least what tek support have told me.

Hmmm...didn't quite expect that, but it definitely explains the issue. By any chance do the color codes at least match up on the slots? The manual for that board seemed to indicate that the matching slots (1/2 & 3/4) were color-coded...but if they miswired 1 & 4 I wonder if the colors are now mismatched as well.

Yeah me too ! The manual for that board is mistaken, slot colors are from the CPU.. black blue black blue. But it doesn't matter.. dimm4 is actually the closest to the CPU. And i included that one of the things that caused random reboots was the GPU overheat ! Now case opened everything works fine... thank you ^^

Update. The manual is actually only black printed :p
