upgrade laptop hard drive

What exactly do you mean by "a more powerful one"? Do you mean faster, or just more capacity, or both? You don't say what laptop you have, but judging by the size of the HDD I'm going to guess it's somewhat old. Therefore you won't get much benefit from an SSD because it will be limited by the SATA I or SATA II speeds of your hard drive controller. I did put one in my daughter's Dell, which has a SATA II controller, and her read speeds are about 210 MB/second, which is more than double what her 500 GB HDD was that came with it, but nowhere near the speeds the SSD was capable of (410 MB/second).

Your best bet is to get a larger, somewhat faster drive, such as a 320 GB or 500 GB 2.5" HDD that spins at 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm.
