Hello all. My brother recently got a desktop (http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/333326/HP-Pavilion-500-000-500-a60/?cm_mmc=CSE-_-Nextag-_-Computers_and_Tablets-_-333326&Channel=NexTag&ntclickid=-9078537751992700294&mr:referralID=da66f0fb-95aa-11e3-beb7-001b2166c2c0)

I was going to buy a graphics card for him since the integrated graphics are crap, however upon opening the case, I noticed that there wasn't a PCI Express slot, but there is a PCI mini slot? No clue what that is but are there graphics cards made for such slots?

If not I know we'll have to buy a new MOBO, but is there certain guidelines to buying a new motherboard?

All help will be appreciated.

Your brother's computer isn't designed for upgrading, as you may have noticed. Without any expansion slots other than the Mini-PCIe slot, there's no upgrade path for a video card. Mini PCIe does not have any video cards made for it.

Looking at the computer's specifications for the motherboard (found here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03779602&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=5374450#N302 ) shows me that the power supply for the computer isn't in the tower itself, but plugs into the back, similar to a laptop (knowing HP, it probably is a laptop power supply). That severely limits your motherboard replacement options.

Personally, I'd look at replacing the computer completely with something that uses more standard parts.

Well I have a few old PSUs in my closet, so I could always install that one in there. I just don't know how MOBO's work. Would I need to get an AMD MOBO since his processor is AMD?
