CPU Clockspeed suddenly goes down during games?

I have an AMD FX-4100 overclocked to 4.2GHz. During playing games this clock speed goes down to 1.5GHz. This causes my FPS to go down to about 10FPS (In Battlefield 3)

I am sure that this is happening, how do i fix this?

My 8350 would never shut down due to heat - just due to instability. It would, however, down clock to 2000ghz whenever my VRM/Mosfet temps started creeping up too far. That might be what's going on now. Download AMD Overdrive and run their benchmark while you set it to record your stats. If you see your temp climb climb climb, plummet and then start over - this is your issue.

That's dangerously high, I wouldn't attempt any overclock or benchmarking until you are sure your thermal solution is functioning correctly.

Yeah, that is just shy of melting the solder that connects the chip and WAY too high. It shouldn't get above 80C.
