R9 290 is faster, in terms of raw performance. Usually getting higher fps in most games. But it tends to vary a lot. But I'd pick it thanks to the extra vram and a larger bus at 512bit.
However if you want the r9 290, you might want to go with Sapphire's Trixx cooler instead. It performs better. (Stupid of me to pick the windforce xD)

If you're overclocking or not, the 290 is faster.

I was checking on amazon and newegg, The cheapest i see an R9 290 non reference is the windforce for $500.. The rest all $600 +.. Thats the only reason i mentioned windforce . I'd prefer sapphire also but do you know where I can get a $500 or less version?

So the r9 290 is faster than the 780 superclocked right?

Yeah it's faster. If the windforce is cheaper, go ahead and take it. Also if you play Battlefield 4 you will see a lot better fps with a r9 290 thanks to the API Mantle.

I would take the 780, the max diff was 5fps with 290 taking the lead. But considering that they are all above $520, I would call for the 780, 384-bit memory bus is MORE than enough, 3gb will last you long but now as much as 4 gb. The memory bus in the 290 is purely for marketing. Plus, nvidia has better software support and SLI support, compared to amd's crossfire which disappointed me.

Don't know about crossfire but the drivers have worked just fine for me, except for their beta drivers.

Generally, if the price difference is <$10, get the 290. Else 780...290 has the winning edge but not that significant to spend >$10, atleast for me. Let alone it consumes more power than 780. But if you game a lot and most of your games favor AMD cards more than nvidia, it's a whole different story.

It depends on when u r buying this card. If its in a month's time or so, the prices may drop, if the 290 drops to close to or equal to the 780, I would take the 290.
