Since I am sending 8Gbs of faulty ram back to G. Skill and bought 8Gbs of the same brand and kind of ram to cover me while I am sending back the faulty stuff, I will have a total of 16Gbs when the new ram show ups from G. Skill through the RMA.

Is there a need for a gamer to have 16Gbs of ram?

I don't do photo editing, I rarely burn a DvD and photo editing.

I have 16GB, and running the OS and 3 VMs at the same time, I don't think I've ever gone over 11.5GB.

8GB is almost certainly fine for your use.

nope, not unless you play a lot of games still in Alpha/Beta where it's still not properly optimized yet, sometimes in system memory usage.
