I recently upgraded my processor from a AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE to a AMD FX 8350 and now i have sudden fps drop. Other members told me it's because my mob doesnt support it but it runs perfect until i play a game. I will get about 90-120 fps then it spikes and goes down to 15-25

What could be the cause of this?

PC Specs:

CPU: AMD FX 8350
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 660
Motherboard: ASROCK 960GM-U3S3 FX
SSD: OCZ Vertex 2
HDD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda
Case: Thermake Armour A90
Cooling: Corsair H80i
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
RAM: 8GB PNY 1600
PSU: Rosewill TACHYON 650W

It is most likely the boards VRM's getting hot and forcing thermal throttling on the CPU. Basically too much CPU for the board.

So the best solution would be to get a new mob?
If so recommend any budget ones?

also they did update the CPU list with the new Bios that they released for that board. P1.40 / What bios version are you running?

That board is capable of handling the 125W CPU's so thermal throttling should not be an issue. But to test Rolli's theory If you have one Place a fan pointing at the VRM's on the left side of the CPU and see if it helps. If it helps then it is the VRM's throttling the CPU but if it does not then there is another issue some where.

Im running 1.40 and i sure will try placing a fan there because i have water cooling so there is no fan near the cpu. Ill get back to you soon.

Turn off the AMD Power Management (ARM) in your BIOs. I was having this exact issue when I swapped from a Phenom X4 955 to an FX8150. It was automatically downclocking my CPU. Took me from about 120FPS in BF4 to a 4-5 second span of 15FPS. Turned ARM of, all is well.

Well it worked for like the first 10 min or so but it seems to be doing it again. Hopefully it fixes. Thanks though. Still better than before. :D

Did you try the Fan and see if it helped?

Oh your motherboard doesn't support that cpu. It's not likely to ever properly work. I had bought an 8320 to pop into my ASRock 990FX Extreme3, would work fine in BF4 for long amounts of time, but eventually hard freezing.

Heating is a major issue with that board, hence ASRock DROPPED support for the 8320/8350. Mine ran really hot even with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

In the end, I now have the Fiance's old 8150 and she has the 8320.

I did what rrwho372000 said to do and put a corsair fan right on it and my fan i use at night and just played a game of bf4... no drop. :D
Thanks alot again. I think im just going to have to upgrade my mob sometime but meanwhile i will leave it like this. I will get back to you and let you know if it fixed my prob perm. But thanks again.

Like I said, it did run BF4 fine, for a while. For some reason, it HATED Civ 4, always hard-freezing within the first few moves. Here's to hoping it stays stable!

they sell small heat sinks that you can place on the chokes to help keep them cool. this will be a much better temp fix if the VRM is overheating.

here is a link to the heat sinks: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

it will yes, but the one I linked to is better IMO. If you just ordered it I would just get in touch with them (if newegg you can talk to a rep right online) and cancel/change the order to the one I linked.

edit: if it's off newegg, it shouldn't be an issue at all being as they are the same price.

Well it already withdrew the payment and i cant wait to get the money back so i might just have to stick with this one because the motherboard i have now is on the urge of dying because its overpowered.

Yessir, and they say it takes 3-5 Buisness days and tbh i can't wait another day cuz it wont even turn on.

well if you don't plan on overclocking the one you ordered will more than suffice. If you do plan on doing some overclocking (these chips are nice at 4.2+) then the gigabyte will serve you much better. If you want to change to the gigabyte get in touch with a rep asap and have them switch the order to the gigabyte before the order ships, no extra charges should need be applied since they are the same price.

It is .50$ more expensive but if i do plan on overlocking will it mess up? Because i can overclock and want to but if it will mess up then i will not.

If you want to overclock then I would definitely go for the gigabyte. That's actually the board I was looking to get but it was out of stock last month when I placed my order so I spent 25 more and got the one I have now.

the asrock is 4+1 power phase vs 8+2 on the gigabyte.

By the time somebody gets back to me about switching it will be too late and shipped. But say i was not to switch and got the board, can i still overclock ad it work properly? If it wont work properly im fine with keeping it at stock.

Yeah it will work fine at stock and if you take the fan off the stock 8320/8350 cooler and rig it to the vrm heatsink to cool it I would think that board would be fine to 4.4 if temps are fine. I personally wouldn't expect more than 4.4 out of that board but your mileage will vary.

If you want to get in touch with someone right now go to newegg.com then scroll down to contact us. Then click chat with us on the left side then order assistance then make change to current order.

If it hasn't left their warehouse, the order can be modified. Done it a few times myself and never had an issue. Don't get me wrong you'll do fine with the AsRock, but the gigabyte is going to be a better overclocker and more than likely more stable under load due to the much stronger power setup and it's 50 cents more.

I just contacted them and they told me they cant modify the order becuase it has been processed. So i can only cancel it with would take 3-5 b days to get the money back. But i have an h80i cooling the processor atm.

Thank you for your help. I guess im stuck with this board becuase i cant afford to cancel it and my pc just break and i need my pc asap because i have to work on a big project. But thank you once again.

not a problem...that rep is being a doucher. Youll be fine with the asrock just be smart about your overclock.

up to you, but I know how the itch is lol. You'll be ok if you put the fan on the vrm heatsink (I have one on my vrm heatsink as well as one on the back of the motherboard socket).

I went ahead and just canceled my order and ordered the Gigabyte. I want to thank you again for all your help.

stock you'll be good, but vrm temps contribute to socket temps. It's more of a preventative thing. Why not put it on the vrm sink while you have the motherboard out anyway its always good to get lower temps and if you decide you want to see what the chip can do and play around your already covered.

I think you'll be glad you did that when you decide to overclock. I would still say put the fan on the vrm heat sink on the gigabyte as well just for good measure. Not a problem, glad to help.
