Can I upgrade or start from scratch?

Hey all...been away for a while. So long that my current system is:
Gigabyte P35-DS3l
Intel E2200
4 Gig of OCZ RAM
LiteOn DVD RW
320 Gig Seagate

Needless to say, she is a pig. I want to build a new rig that I don't have to get a cup of coffee while I am trying to load hi rez pics from my DSLR. Primary use will be photo and video editing...which right now is impossible. If I want to stay under a grand, is there anything worth salvaging from my current rig or trash and move on? It seems that Dell ( I know I know) has some halfway decent stuff for $1300 but when I piece stuff together at Newegg I am not saving a ton compared to what Dell is charging (XPS 8700 SE). What am I missing?

Many thanks in advance to all.

You can re-use your optical drive if it's SATA. Otherwise, I wouldn't plan on re-using any components. Here's one for around $1000.

If you can add a little to the budget then the i7-4770K and an aftermarket CPU cooler would be a good choice for your intended use. You may not even need a discreet GPU if you won't be doing any gaming and the software you use can utilize the integrated GPU.

That's too nice of a cpu and mobo to throw in a measly 260X. A rig like that would be much better with a 760 or better.

If he's not gaming then a 260X is more than he needs

While this build ism't that much cheaper it is alot better
CPU: I7-4770k is overclock able, while the I7-4770 is not
Motherboard: Motherboard is alot better then what you will find in that Dell.
RAM: Abit better then the Dell
SSD: the Dell did not have one, SSD are really fast and the computer will be in less than a minute.
HHD: About the same.
Video card: The Dell has a R9 270 which costs more and is weaker then the Radeon 7870.
Case: Better air flow
PSU: Alot better.
OS: Same
Optical Drive: Just use your old one.

Ok. So no gaming. Got a ps4 for that. Not sure on editing software yet but likely pro level for photos. Will also edit HD video from my gopro 3+ black. This is the only heavy lifting that will be asked of her. My last build (listed at the top) was done by yours truly with the help of you guys. Is the case even salvageable. Lol.

No gaming to be done on this rig at all...that being said...do I need a separate graphics card? Can I use my current case? And if I, which I likely would, go to the 4770k, will I definitely need a aftermarket cooler and if so what would you recommend knowing that I won't be gaming.

Lastly, what is the benefit of these small size SSD's?

With thanks!

I didn't see you list your current case, so it's hard to say if it will work or not. What is the case. You don't NEED an aftermarket CPU cooler for the i7-4770K, but it's a very good idea so you can at least slightly overclock it to give you a free speed boost. The Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is very popular due to its performance/price ratio. I've used the XIGMATEK Gaia SD1283 and had great luck with it, but it's slightly more expensive than the 212 EVO. Either one would work for a modest overclock.

The SSDs greatly speed up everything installed on them. They help with boot time, program launch time, and overall system snappiness. It's just an overall better experience and you will never go back to a system without an SSD once you've had one.

Apologies, didn't realize. Here are the items I forgot to include that I have.

Rosewill R5601-BK 0.8mm Japanese Cold Rolled Steel Screw-less Dual 120mm Fans ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147038

Rosewill RP600V2-S-SL 600W ATX12V v2.01 SLI Ready Power Supply - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182032

EVGA 256-P2-N751-TR GeForce 8600 GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Video Card - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130085

ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro Rev. 2, CPU Cooler - Intel & AMD, Multi-Directional Mount, 92mm PWM Fan - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134

The only component that may be worth re-using is the CPU cooler, but I doubt it has the hardware to mount it to your new LGA 1150 motherboard. The cooler is listed as compatible with LGA 1150, so the bracket may be available. The stock cooler will work fine with the CPU at stock speeds. You could try using the case, but the new Fractal Design Core 1000 is only $30 shipped. The Rosewill PSU is garbage. The 8600 GT may be slightly faster than the integrated Intel HD graphics.
