FX-8320 Temps unusual or ok?

I just installed my FX8320 Black edition and am trying to read temps for it accurately. Under HWmonitor there are 3 temps under the temperatures tab and one under my AMD FX-8320 tab. the middle on the temps tab reads 50c idle and 62c after 30 seconds of prime 95 stress test while the other hit 20c idle and 38 after 30 seconds of stress. which is rright? I am using a COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus heatsink and have the stock clock to 3.5 as it was set in amd overdrive when i got it. My motherboard is the msi 970a-g46

Yea for a few minutes i would think. I mean i idle at 48-50c. That seems really high to me

There IS a known problem with MSI 970 boards not being able to handle the 8320/8350's high TDP even though they are listed as compatible. I'm not sure if it's causing your temperature issue BUT one of the readings may be the VRM's.

The MSI 970 VRMS have no heatsinks and that causes them to hotter than the intensity of 7 suns, This can lead to CPU throttling/crashing when combined with a 8320/8350.

See in this image, under the motherboard on the far right in cpuid monitor the Tmpin1 are the HOT AS HELL 84C VRMS.

I just realised you said the "Middle" reading, that is the god damn VRMS. you've run into the common issue with this board and if I'm honest it's hard to sort/impossible but you can try with a VRM headsink/some fans.

IF you can afford it, this mobo is on offer and will be great for you:

http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=MB-970AUD3&c=CJ - It's got 8+2 phase power instead of 4+1 phase power(which the msi has) meaning that it will power your CPU with cleaner power and at a lower temperature.

There are cheaper alternatives but this is the cheapest one that is "ideal" unless you're willing to stump up the cash for the 990fx boards then we can look at those.

I feel it should be illegal for MSI to advertise their 970's as handling an 8320/50 because they really can't.

yes, you're right about it not supporting which is good. I'm still surprised that msi claim it can support an fx-8*** anything though.

Anyway if you're wondering the VRM's are under the long black strip above the cpu socket on this image(so yes part of the mobo) interesting they have a heatsink but obviously the 8320 is not supported and although VRMS can run at upto 100c I guess you'd like to be on the safe side.

What CPU did you use on this board prior to the 8320?

Are you willing to pay for the Gigabyte 970-UD3 I posted? If not I can post alternatives that aren't as great but will work for stock.

I was using a Fx-4100 before this. The chip was 100 new at micro center which was a great deal and i was not wanting to spend more money on a board. Do i really need to change the mobo if i keep this cpu at stock? because my idle goes down to 46c. I know i will eventually need to switch if i want to OC but it doesnt seem terrible for now. Any things i could do to my mobo or case to cool it?

How is this one? ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0

It's better than your current one, has 6+2 VRM's which is better than 4+1 and worse than the gigabyte with 8+2, That said, it is more than capable of powering the fx-8320 as there are reviews of using it to power the more power hungry FX-8350 OC'ed.

This ASUS board is also better for crossfire than the gigabyte I posted as it will run two GPU's at 8x rather than one at 16x and one at 4x like the Gigabyte.

http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/motherboards/1297690/asus-m5a99x-evo-r2-0 - review for you to look at

Yes you will need to reinstall windows when you ugprade your mobo.

Which would you pick if i plan on having that cpu and only one gpu?

I'm semi-biased as I like gigabyte boards and own a similar board BUT I'd go for the gigabyte just because of the better power, 8+2.

If you only plan on using 1gpu go for the gigabyte and if you want to get SLI/Crossfire in the future get the asus.
