I just put together a new build for my friend. When I turn the computer on a nasty crackling sound emerges. I've concluded it is the HDD (I unplugged it and the sound didn't happen)

I recorded it and uploaded it for you to listen.

It is bad around 0:17

Edit: The drive is a WD 1TB Black

ehh.....

I've heard this on plenty of drives that continue to perform. It is the sound of the actuating arm that contains the write/read head tracking across the platter(s) of your disc. Nothing to be alarmed about. You can download CrystalDiskInfo and get some information about the health of the disk if you are worried but, I wouldn't be alarmed.

Hmm you could be right. My pc has the exact same drive, but the OS isnt installed on it, unlike his. I also believe it happened right after i installed the OS. The drive functions just fine, I just find the noise nasty.

There isn't much you can do about it. Now that you've noticed it.... you will hear it all the time too. I find Seagate drives to have less "rattle/crackle" but more "high-pitch" whine.
