I currently run 2 computers, a late 2012 iMac 27 inch and a custom PC running a GTX 770. Per specifications for the Dell, it has a brightness of 500, compared to the iMac with 375. Sitting side by side, the Dell looks incredibly washed out and dim. Whites are noticeably less white.

I know the iMac has a greater resolution, but is there anything else contributing to the significant difference I see?

The LCD filter is the main difference between monitors. For example, IPS panels are typically the best with better color and viewing angles.

I'm not sure the resolution has much to do with it. I have a 27", 2560x1440 Dell U2711 and it looks great. Again, it's the IPS panel that's likely the main reason.

Even if both had IPS panels, the quality of build, backlight spacing and how well it's CALIBRATED can make a big difference.

In fact, some monitors look much better with a few tweaks (and some look worse by incorrectly tweaking).

Thanks, I didn't realize that Apple displays were IPS. Off to research IPS!
