Just as the title says guys.

What's the best sound card for gaming with headphones? I know the headphones take a huge role in this situation but based on personal preference what's your choice? Consider 3d gaming surround, best sound quality, also good mic clarity. Thanks for you answers. I appreciate every view point.

if you have a decent motherboard it probably supports at least 5.1 surround already. Just make sure whatever head set you get supports surround sound.

I have an ASUS Z87-A…I'm gonna get http://pcpartpicker.com/part/sennheiser-headphones-5041... for my headset. So I want to make sure my onboard sound chip is going to use the full potential of this headset. If not I need to find a good sound card thats mainly used for gaming.

The onboard audio solution will be adequate.

That board has realtek audio, doing a search of what kind it has it has 10 channels of audio and supports up to 7.1. That should allow any headset to reach its potential.

I don't know if there's a difference between 3d and 7.1, but 7.1 means it is equivalent to if you had 7 speakers and a bass module around you, so it's as good as it will get.

thats not exactly what 7.1 is

It means that you can connect 7 channels of speakers to your onboard sound (sound from 7 directions). A standard pair of stereo headphones (1 speaker in each ear) can only use a maximum of 2.1, so any system with 2.1 sound will run it.

The difference between this and what woltej said is that you are only going to use 2.1 sound, it doesn't matter if it has 7.1 or not.

Don't worry that just because it's 2.1 you won't be able to get surround sound, try the virtual barber shop simulation on any standard headphones or earbuds you have and see if you can tell. If you can then it's working right and you will experience the same in gaming. If you don't sense surround sound then you probably have the setup wrong.
