After nearly 6 years of service, my HD CRT bit the dust recently. As much as it pains me to admit it, it looks like I'm in the market for a flat panel display. After looking at HDTVs in my price range ($300 +/-), I concluded that a monitor would be the way to go. The ASUS MX279H looks like a suitable replacement for my TV, though I heard that IPS panels aren't necessarily preferred for gaming due to response times. I also liked the BenQ RL2455HM, but TN panels supposedly have issues with color reproduction. Are IPS panels sufficient for gaming, or should I opt for the TN panel, even if it doesn't reproduce colors accurately?

I'm also curious to know how a PS3 and X360 will look on a 1080p panel. Are 720p games going to look muddled, or is the upscaling clean enough to not cause any dramatic loss in quality?

I'm up for any and all recommendations, but keep in mind that my budget is around $300.
