Just was a bit concerned about my new pc i have almost built. The power supply Antec Quattro 1000w is second hand and is about a year old. Ive heard that if a psu fails it can Kill other parts. Just wondering if there is anything I can do to protect the parts from this. (Ive heard that this psu can fail quite early in its life time) I do not Honestly have the money to replace my parts!!!!

Thanks

Hi

A 1000W PSU should support 2 or 3 high power graphics cards safely
If it is running at 1/2 or 1/3 load it is unlikely to fail unless there is a mains power surge or fault.

A faulty motherboard can blow a power supply as well as a faulty PSU blow a motherboard
There was a youtube video showing a faulty motherboard blowing up a series of power supplies. (smoke & flames)

There is nothing much you can do to protect the motherboard from a PSU failing and putting out a high voltage as it dies. Though good design should prevent this

Some years ago there was an incident in the building I worked at where engineers working over the weekend connected 416V to 240V ring main circuits

Practically all computer & printer PSU in building blew but very few PC's suffered damage to other components.

If the PSU has run for a year it has had a 'good burn in' test and will last for many more years before failing (on average, no one can guarantee the life of a complex component)
