my lenovo g510 froze last night while watching a dvd on it, had to take the the batery out to fix it

Probably caused by reading a bad DVD. You can try Alt + Ctrl + Del to open task manager and kill the non responding processes or just take the DVD out.
And you won't have to take out battery if you want laptop to switch off. Just press and hold power button.
