I would like to have acess to my drives in my main office machine. I can share the drives and have setup the trust status in my norton. When I try to access the drive on a laptop connected to the network, it says..

"Windows cannot acess \\whatever-pc\h You do not have permission to access \\whatever-pc\h. Contact your network administrator to request access."

I can, however, share a folder within the h drive and it shows up in the network and is accessible. I have tried allowing all permissions via both the sharing AND the security tabs through drive properties. What am I missing? Thanks!

Do I need to create another user on my main rig so that I can connect as that user? I tried connecting as my logon that I am already logged on as on the main rig but that didn't work. I don't know what username and password to enter. I do have password protected sharing turned off.

Try using another account: \\whatever-pc\your-account-on-that-pc

For instance, if I have two PCs, PC1 and PC2, both PCs have an admin account named "TomHW", and I'm attempting to connect to the C: Drive of PC2 from PC1, I would try to access the drive using:

\\PC2\C$

When it asks for a userID and password, I'd enter:

\\PC2\TomHW

Now we're getting somewhere. I created an administrative account on the laptop (my gf's) with identical Username and pw as my administrative account on my main rig. When I went to access the shared drive root it let me right in. I am restarting now to see if I log on as my gf and enter the username and pw as you described.. if it will now let me in as a way to access the root quickly while on her account. ... Okay that didn't work. So far the only way to access the root directly is to log on to the Laptop with the same exact username and pw as the one on the main rig. Is that normal? .... okay now I think it has something to do with the new account settings because I tried to just rename my admin account on a 3rd computer and make it the same password but that did not allow me to access the root on the main rig.

I finally found the answer! This is from www.overclockers.com.au

"Right click on the hardrive from windows explorer. Go to properties. Click on Security. Click edit. Add "everyone" to the group and assign the permissions you want. Then go to sharing and share the drive as you would normally. The root of the drive will now be accessible over the network."

You have to add the group and physically type "everyone". I don't know why it took so long to find this answer as I have seen so many people asking this same question. Thank you very much WOLF for your effort. Hopefully this will help others.
