Wondering if anyone has any idea exactly *what* the problem is on some HP series machines from about 3 years ago with this motherboard.

According to :

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03199423

there was an extended warranty put in place due to problems with the motherboard. I have a HPE-410f that worked quite well for 2 years, and has since been used occasionally as a 2nd machine. It has started crashing (bsod) / rebooting randomly & locking up during POST.

Obviously I've missed the boat on the warranty deal, but would be interested find out just what was faulty on this motherboard....if it's something like a bad cap or a known weak solder point, I might bring it to a friend and attempt a repair. Any input much appreciated.

I read your thread, and it's obviously the same problem since we both have an hp model with that motherboard, which is known to have a defect. I've been trying to find out exactly what the problem is, but have been unsuccessful. I've tested the RAM, drive, PSU, and monitored temps while stressing both CPU and GPU. All seems fine. I also checked the northbridge and southbridge - they do not get more than slightly warm, and I also undid the heatsinks clips and gave them each a very gentle wiggle, but the heatsinks are not loose so I assume the thermal paste is fine and they are not overheating.

But the machine will still BSOD/shutdown completely randomly sometimes. Twice it has also had no video and locked up during POST, refusing to boot until it was allowed to sit a while....after 10 minutes or so, it then booted fine again.

Very strange....and stranger still that nobody seems to have a clue what the problem is with these motherboards. Was there a known bad batch of northbridge chips that year? A known bad batch of a specific cap that is found on these boards? A flakey solder point? Again, strange that you can find many posts about different model hp machines with this same motherboard and same problems, yet none of the hardware techies can figure out the cause of the problems.
