Right now I have a ph8h67-m pro/cm6850/dp_mb mainboard ASUS with intel i5 2320 and GeForce 760 gtx. I am wanting to upgrade my CPU but I want to get the best CPU for my money. I feel that if I upgrade to even the best CPU that this mainboard will allow (socket LGA 1155 I believe) that it will only be a small upgrade and not worth the money. Basically, what is the best CPU that I can get for this mainboard and would it be better to get a new board and newer CPU? For example the Intel Core i7-3820 is under $300 with great performance. I think I would need a new mainboard for this though.
thanks, PC Noob
I guess I should add that this is for gaming. I play CS:GO and don't really care about the graphics so much as I play on low settings to gain performance.

well, I had the i5 with the 460gtx and upgraded to the 760gtx. big difference with the higher settings and on some other games I play.
Now I'm wanting to upgrade my cpu since the i5 2320 is really a low end cpu isn't it? I'm looking for speed in general.

Oh wow. that would be amazing and easy. I did not realize that. I thought the FCLGA1155 and the LGA1155 were two different sockets completely. Does the FCL just part of this just have to do with the update?
I will have to look into this. I feel this would be my best option. I like the idea of the 1230v2 as well. What do you think about that?

After just a short research. I think this is a good idea. The only difference I see is the overclocking which I have no plans on touching.

No meaningful difference.
FC refers to a Flip Chip. Which all modern processors since the P2 (I believe) are. The 386, 486 ,and original Pentium had the chip face towards the socket and the connector interface towards the heatsink. This was covered in a casing to protect the interconnects.
As processors created more heat they flipped the chip over to expose the heatsink directly to the face of the chip.

When high pressure heatsinks were needed they started covering the processor face with a metal cap or IHS. to protect the fragile silicone surface. This started with the Pentium 3 Tualatin processors and is still used today.
So even if it is not labeled as FCLGA it actually is.

I see what you are saying, but what does this link show exactly other than comparing two similar cpu's?

To start with, since you have a H67 chipset, it does not make a difference whether you get a "K" cpu or not as overclocking wont be supported anyway. Do not therefore consider spending the extra money on a "K" cpu.

As for migrating to a xeon cpu for gaming it may work for you but I find it a bit hard to accept that a 2320 is giving you performance hit with 760 and that you have to actually play the game at low settings. Something might not be right with your configuration or the way your system has been set up. Can you take a screen shot of the temperature readouts for your cpu under load and idle and upload it so we may all have a look at it?

I completely agree with Dirtyferret that upgrading your cpu to an i7 or xeon 1155 would be more of a waste of money and that you may not see any perceivable performance gain.

I like the idea of getting two GPU's. Also I actually play CS with 800x600 just because that is what I used 12 yrs ago when I started. Everything else looks funny to me. But have been testing out 1280x720 and thinking of changing. At these lower res do you think this would still be the best option?
Added: Thank you all so much for your help. This is exactly what I was looking for and needed.

Ehhh, very nice. I was actually looking for something like this. Since I know very little about PC's. I was always confused on what's best because I knew it didn't just go i3, i5, i7 bottom to top as far as performance but that they were all mixed up as far as quality. thank you.

I will play around with this before I go any further into looking about upgrading. It's not just a visual thing either I don't think. I just feel that the game responds better and smoother. Even just as far as controlling spray patterns. I'm not sure why but I think even many of the top pro players prefer it this way for CS. I play all my other games with higher res but CS just seems much more demanding on accuracy of gameplay.

What would be the easiest way for me to do this?

So. after playing around w/ it a little bit. It's not so much the higher res but the 16:9. Everything is skinny and tall in CS. doesn't seem right. Would it be odd to have it on a higher res but 4:3 1600x1200 rather than the 1920x1080?

and my mobo doesn't support sli :(

download openhadwaremonitor or coretemp utility and monitor your temps and cpu load while you play. additionally, openhardwaremonitor will show you how much of your gpu are you actually utilizing while gaming. ideally, it should be 100% and acceptable would be 90+

check that and let us know.
