Transferring photos to USB

I have about 6500 photos of my children and other general photos which I would like to put onto a USB stick for safety and so I can make space on my hard drive (they take up 27GB).

I purchased a 32GB USB card and transferred all the photos onto it, but when I try to view them on the same laptop only about half work, the others don't show a thumbnail of the image and when I click them it says 'The file may be unsupported, damaged or corrupted.' These files work as they should on the drive I copied them from.

I've tried formatting a few times and re transferring but still get the same problem. I'm not sure if it's the same photos every time, but I don't think it is.

Can somebody tell me please why some work and some don't, and also how to resolve my issue?

Solution
A USB stick is just about the worst choice for 'safety.
Get a regular external hard drive. Hopefully you didn't remove them from the main drive yet.

Thanks for replying. I will get an external hd then. Just thought I'd do it a bit cheaper lol

We all like to save money, but irreplaceable photos of your kids is not the place to cheap out. And photos that exist on only one drive may be said to not exist at all.
