Hi there folks. I'm a complete newb treading the minefield of home computing, "Attempting" to save a few pounds in these tough economic times by piecing together my own build. I'm looking to put together a mid-high end gaming rig that will play most titles on the market today (graphically comparable or preferably superior to the PS4/Xbox One). However, as the thread title states, I'm very new to all of this. I have a neighbor who says he can put the thing together for me if i buy all the parts, but i want to run by you guys what i have bookmarked so far in terms of hardware...

Case - corsair carbide series 300r
Power Supply - Corsair Builder Series CXM 600W Modular 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX/EPS PSU
CPU - intel core i5-4670k
Motherboard - MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming - socket 1150 - chipset Z87 - ATX
Graphics - Asus HD 7770 2GB AMD Radeon
RAM - Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz CL9 XMP
Main SSD - Seagate 600 ST240HM000 240GB
Storage HDD - Western Digital Black - 3.5 inch 1TB Desktop SATA Hard Drive - OEM
Optical Drive - LiteOn IHAS124-04 24x SATA Half Height Internal DVDRW Drive (cheap and cheerful)

Are these items compatible? If not, could you please suggest alternatives that would give me the same performance at the same price range. Or if you could even suggest alternatives that would do as good of a job as those listed, but will cost less, then that would be very welcome advice indeed.

Thank you all for having the patience to look at this thread and help me out.

Cheers

BK ;)

Hey there. Thank you so much for the quick replies...

So with the GPU, CPU and MoBo you guys have recommended, will they fit easily into my corsair carbide series 300r case? and will the Corsair Builder Series CXM 600W power supply be enough to power it all?

Thank you.

Yes to both. All will fit, and the PSU will power it perfect. Even a little much with some OC headroom

the guys are right trying to convince you into amd fx and 270x, because it is cheap and will do the work...

your build will work although there are some arguable moments... you pick a very decent cpu, but a weak gpu for your purpuses... games do not require a huge amount of processing as much as graphics processing... you dont have cpu cooler (well you can use the stock cooler in the cpu box, but it will be bloody loud and your cpu will be kinda hot)... you say you saved some pounds and yet you want a 240gb ssd. try to make it 120-128 which is more than enough and throw the extra money on something else...

small notice - me and my friend have built an fx6300 + 7870 2gb system and it runs things like tomb raider 2013, battlefield 4 at 40fps+ at ultra settings... so you would know what to expect from these parts...

my advice to you
if you decide to save money then buy an fx6300, its perfect
if you want to stick with intel, get a cheaper i5, you do not need an overcloaking version of it, the simplest one will suffice (especialy you do not have a custom cooler, and haswells dont overclock well... you do not need to overclock, but if you would want to, then get an ivy bridge)
get a cpu cooler... it doesnt need to be too expensive... basicaly we bought a cooler master hyper evo and it works well and quiet (mind its big profile, not for small chassis)
buy a better graphics card... simply divert money from cpu to the gpu, get a 7870, a 270 or 270x or gtx760 and it will do the job you want it to do
save money by getting a smaller ssd... calculate and think whether you need more than 128 gbs... well unless you want to run some games on an ssd, but it will only boost your loading times, not actual performance... would you rather play at higher qualities than load the games faster?

hope this helps

just where did i said 7870 not a 270x you blind imbicil? a guy wants to buy an overcloackable i5 and pair it with something as low as 7770 and none of you bothered to mention that... and what was that you said that his psu will give him a little bit OC headroom, WHERE... he didnt even pick a custom cooler for the cpu... all I see is fanboy kids, i dont know where you got your badges...

You said "simply divert money from cpu to the gpu, get a 7870, a 270 or 270x or gtx760 "
Which implies that you do NOT know the difference between a 7870 and a 270X.
And the fact that you even mention the 7870 says that you have no knowledge of current prices or performance in the AMD Rx Series.
So, you blind imbicile, (notice the E) shut up and do your research.

Eek... Sorry, i didn't mean to start a row. I value all your input and thank you all.

@Super Batman: I've just bookmarked a M5A97 R 2.0 on Ebay for £60... I can't believe how cheap it is :)

@Vixl2ds: Thanks for the heads up on the SSD. You're probably right, i could save a few pounds there. I was thinking about speed when i went for the Western Digital Black even though it's only for storage. If you can think of another 1TB HDD that is still pretty fast but costs less, i'd appreciate your input.

Thanks guys.

I admit I do not know specific differences between 7800 series and r9 series... only the price range, and I know what the 7870 did when we bought it... yes I misspell words and I am from europe, which is why parts come here slower, and when we for example still use old series and try to use the new ones, the guys in america already on full swing using the new ones and old ones are a thing of the past...
but what did you added to the conversation? all you did was nodded to the amd suggestion, thats it. you didnt overlooked that he has 240gb ssd, nor the black edition WD drive, nor the i5 K, nothing. But you saw a little thing in my suggestion that you didnt liked and you had to point it out with insults...
just how old are you super batman? all I see are speed demon, night owl badges and a nick of super batman that insults... hence a teenage night gamer... so you know a thing or 2 about gpus and motherboards and how to insult without hesitation, anything else?

im too tired to browse and check, sorry... but you can open a topic about WD green, blue, black drives and see what fits. Black one is probably pretty reliable, but it is very pricy right? just browse... dont rush, when we rush, we loose money
