Audio Crackling/Popping whilst playing games

I recently formatted my SSD and overclocked my CPU again (as BIOS settings were lost), so that I could upgrade to windows 7 Professional to utilize all 32GB of ram that are in my pc.

Since formatting my SSD, I have noticed when playing games (through steam, haven't tested non-steam games) Audio Popping/Crackling sounds which when playing multiple audio tracks from different sources such as Steam Games, Teamspeak and Youtube at once will then continue across to the other applications, e.g when experiencing audio popping i'd quit a steam game and continue listening to music through youtube, i'd then experience audio popping through youtube etc.

Initially I assumed this was a fault with my sound cards seating / dust in the ports after a clean I tested it again with no change. Still receiving audio popping when playing steam games which bleeds across to other audio tracks. I also tried reinstalling the audio drivers/video drivers & updating them to no avail. (I have also tested different aux ports on my PC aswell as different speakers / headphones so they are not the cause of the issue as it is experienced across everything I plug into my PC) And I have also turned off audio enhancements and tried running at a different quality with no affect.

After reading a few posts I thought it could be to do with some sort of interference within my case (As I had recently installed a cold cathode light within it). So I ran DPC latency and recieved an
absolute maximum of: 1182 us
This doesn't indicate a latency issue.

So after this someone suggested testing the sound without overclocking the CPU/GPU, so I removed the overclock and restored to factory defaults (Even though it had been working without audio popping prior to the format of the SSD)
This also did not fix the audio popping/crackling sound when playing games.

I've just tried flashing my BIOS to the latest version / with a removed overclock on CPU/GPU which has still left me with audio crackling / popping.

(Updated from BIOS version 1104 to 4608)

If anyone could please help me get to the bottom of this as it is making it impossible for me to use my PC with audio.

I haven't tried removing the CC light but I didn't think that would be in an issue?

If your sound card is onboard, you can try changing the number of cycles through your pcie lanes on your motherboard. Sometimes you can get interference between pci devices and onboard sound if one of them/combination of them is using too much of the bandwidth because they are on the same bridge on your motherboard. Check your bios for pcie settings. Change the rate and test, you can't really hurt anything even if the change doesn't help your situation.

An added thought, check to see that any sata wires in your case aren't touching other wires or devices; specifically any of your sata cables and wires for audio devices like your case-front jacks. These in rare cases can have interference issues.

Just looking at this now, and only thing I could see for pcie settings was to change it from auto to 6gb/s sata or something, which had no affect on the sound issue

Have also just come to realise i'm not using onboard sound, but a sound card seated into the mobo
onboard sound was faulty so had to replace (was a while ago now)
thinking I should try the other pcie slot for my sound card and see what happens

Worth a shot. If not I would continue down the PCI bus route and checking/setting latencies in bios or individual drivers. Good luck!

I've reseated the sound card in a different slot, which has reduced the crackling a tad (still relatively present and can be as bad as before).
Does this point towards faulty slots? or a dusty card/slots
I'm going to try taking the sound card out tomorrow again and giving the connections a clean along with air dusting the slot to see if this removes the crackling completely.

Thank you for your help :D!
