Hello All,

Purchased a new Samsung 840 Pro to replace my 3 year old 128 SSD because I found out I have only 6 GB left. I use the SSD to run all of my programs and I use a Black Caviar HD for storage and one for Backup of everything. All of this sits on a ASUS P67 Sabertooth with a I72600K processor. My question is, I was really thinking of trying to clone between the SSD's simple because it would take nearly all day to install Window's 7 Pro again and all of my software with all of the required updates. I have a crapload of programs installed because the one vendor requires that you basically keep the previous 2 years versions loaded on your hard drive to work with people who are slow to upgrade.

However, many people recommend a fresh windows install with my system just now reaching 3 years. Anyway, still not crazy about the whole fresh install unless someone says it is almost a must, so could someone please recommend the best way to clone the one SSD to the new SSD? Since I am not a very knowledgeable computer guy, I need some pretty clear steps or at least a link to make a good reference. I have gathered some good info from Samsung and a youtube video but none of them deal with trying to clone an SSD to another SSD, specifically, how and where I would make my connections and set up/ do this cloning.

Also, would you update your bios to current version prior to doing this?

Thanks!

It's not a must, but I almost always recommend a fresh install.
Especially with a several year old installation.

I see a LOT of comments here, and the clone process seems to have many more issues than just a fresh install.

Take 200 people that just got a new drive. 100 choose to clone, 100 do a fresh install. The clone group will have far more issues than the fresh install group.

Usually it works. Usually.
If this is a business environment, I'd fresh install. And if it will only take one day to reinstall fresh, cloning isn't that much quicker.

But if you really want to, CloneZilla is pretty good.

The system is used for business....creating architectural designs, visualizations and walk-thrus. Freaking multiple versions of the software is ridiculous but whatever....

Okay, so if I do the fresh install, I should be able to disconnect the OCZ SSD and simply plug in the new SSD, correct? It can't be that simple.....

Yes. Windows 7 Pro. Do I just reinstall Windows?

Also, hopefully you can help me on this, but if you look at the ASUS board layout, I seem to have (1) Intel serial ATA 6.0 GB connector that states I can set to AHCI, (1) Marvell serial ATA 6.0 GB which cannot support ATAPI devices, and (1) Intel Serial ATA 3.0 GB connectors that can be set of AHCI. I will have the Samsung Pro SSD and my two Black Caviar 1 TB HDDs. One HDD is for general file use and the other HDD is for system backup. Where should the SSD go and what do I do with the other two HDDs? I think the two HDDs are sata 3.

Wow, I just checked and the old SSD is a OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G 2.5" 115GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD). Things have evolved.

I was wrong on the HDD'd, they are both Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive. So now which drives should be connected to which connectors?

Do I need to grab any sort of installed key for windows off current install? I guess I am going to loose some speed on one of the HDD's putting it on the SATA 3 connector, right? Lastly, is there some TRIM thing that gets installed or set for the SSD? Oh, lastly, lastly, should I update my BIOS to current bios before I do this or doesn't it really matter?

As said earlier, find ALL of the software keys. Windows, and whatever else is installed on this.
With that motherboard and CPU, TRIM should be fine.

The HDDs will not see any speed difference. They can't saturate a SATA 3Gbps port.
BIOS? Unknown. Try it without changing first.
