Replacing e6600 for e8500 on MSI P965

I managed to get an e8500 for about 30 bucks and went to install directly as a replacement for my e6600.

However the system locked at <del> to enter setup screen. I replaced the e6600 and it worked fine. Is there something i need to do prior to installing the e8500? I have the latest firmware upgrade on my MSI P965 Platinum motherboard. Will it work even if i don't connect new cpu with thermal paste?

Are you sure you have the latest BIOS?

Also, whenever you replace the CPU, you should also replace the thermal paste.

Yes thanks for chart - i did check this one prior to purchasing the new chip.
Ok Thanks re paste - but not having should not affect whether i even get to the start screen should it?

Is there something i have to do to the MB prior to installing chip? Or does it detect that there is a new chip and adapt?

The one time I went from Core 2 Duo to Core 2 Quad I did was put the new chip in and away I went. You may want to try clearing the CMOS of the motherboard, but other than that I don't know.
