Looking for advice on using dual GPUs

I'm looking to put together a new gaming / video production PC, and since I'm on a low(ish) budget, can't afford top-of-the-line equipment.

I'm wondering, however, if it's possible to use my old Radeon 5750 video card in conjunction with my new one ( I'm looking at the Radeon R9270X or the GeForce GTX760 [2GB] ). I believe they both have Crossfire / capability, so if I could use the 5750 to supplement or boost the 270x / 770's performance, that would be great. Can those two cards function in tandem? Is that even remotely possible, or am I completely misunderstanding the concept of having 2 video cards?

You can only crossfireX two GPUs of the same kind, such as a 7870 and a 7870. There is no cross-crossfireX.

I assumed there was a catch along those lines, but I wanted to ask anyways - thanks for the help!
