Get a Win7 DVD/USB. Boot off it, then format the HDD and install 7. You'll need a key for 7.

what's wrong with win8, wait for 8.1 and most of any issues would go away and leave behind a lot of good improvements.

You will need a win7 license to do what you want to do.

Oh god, another 'What's wrong with it? Learn to live with it.' person.

Good improvements? Haven't found many, though I know that my country's most popular ISP's stock modem/routers would completely fail DNS resolution on 8.1.

There's plenty of annoying UX issues in both 8 and 8.1.

Oh god another win8 hater... improved task manager, storage spaces, improved file copy, improved speed of starting, improved footprint... yes there are UX issues, big ones, but mostly able to be overcome or relearned.

Task manager, yes. But a mild use, and most of the stuff could be got in resource manager too.

File copy is a mild improvement - only reporting, from what I've seen. Haven't done many exhaustive scientific tests, but it doesn't seem substantial.

Startup speed is a minor increase, from what I've seen.

Improved footprint isn't massive, and is somewhat due to the fact that there's a bunch of stuff that's been ripped out and is now payware/adware. E.g. media centre.

OTOH, there's a bunch of stuff that's a significant increase in number of keystrokes required. Things like searching for stuff. Win8.1 improved it a bit, but 7 is still a lot more intuitive and wider-spanning queries.

Relearning stuff for no reason seems somewhat pointless, for some strange reason.

Hi, thanks for your response. I originally had windows 7 ultimate, and then installed windows 8 pro. Would I be better off booting with 7 and then trying to repair, using the windows.old file?

I don't think you can go back from Windows.old - that's just so you can grab files and data IIRC.

I'd do a clean install.
