Installing a new SSD.

I currently have a 1Tb HDD with my OS and everything else on there, obviously. I'm thinking about buying an SSD to install my OS on to boot everything much more efficiently.
I'm confused as to what to do with everything on my HDD. Can I just take the contents of my HDD off and place it onto an external hard drive, then reformat the internal HDD to be able to replace the backed up external hard drive files onto there after the SSD has had the OS installed? Or do I need to manually redownload every programme on my HDD and only be able to keep music/video files on my external to replace after reformatting?
If my questions seems confusing, which it is in all honestly, please let me know and I'll try to be a clear as possible with my intentions.
Thanks.

All your applications will need to be reinstalled. The new OS on the SSD will know nothing about them.
But you can install some on the SSD, some on the HDD.

Find all your install disks and setup files. Usernames & passwords. Drivers.
Copy your files to the external
Disconnect the external and HDD
Connect the SSD
Install the OS
Let it get all the updates
Once everything is working correctly, reconnect the HDD
Install your applications
Copy all your music/pictures/etc back over.

wut? no need to reformat anything.

with a new ssd i'd go with a complete reinstall, though if you buy eg. a samsung i think you can also clone your c: drive onto the ssd with their software. other vendors may offer similar tools and if not you can always clone it with a third party tool.

with cloning though you may run into problems if your current c: drive is too big for your ssd.

all that said i'd still go with a fresh install of os and programs, so you can be sure to get the most out of your new drive.

after you have your ssd set up and ready you may format the former c: partition of your hard drive to avoid conflicts during boot, but that may or may not even be necessary.
