Hello,

Time to upgrade from my crappy old laptop to a nice budget gaming/general rig.

Approximate Purchase Date: Within next 2 weeks-ish.

Budget Range: $1200-1500 AUD (try and keep it to the lower end of the budget, but can go upto 1500 if really needed)

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, Surfing Web, Programming(Java), word docs and adobe photoshop/dreamweaver

Are you buying a monitor: Mabee. If I can get a decent monitor and stick to the budget than yes. Otherwise I'll make do with my gf's spare one.

Parts to Upgrade: None. I am starting from scratch.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes. Windows 7 - 64 Bit(For Memory reason).

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Does not matter, Aslong as its trust worthy.

Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Parts Preferences: CPU: Must be intel(don't ask why... I just want intel) (also, don't need an i7, a decent i5 will do me I think?)
And Mabee, Where I can go with ASUS because I've always liked them(other than there bloatware)

Overclocking: No. If I change my mind down the road I can buy another CPU if the one I choose doesn't allow for it so please don't worry to much about factoring it in.

SLI or Crossfire: Huge No. Heard terrible things and just plain head aches to setup. Please don't try and tell me I should etc etc I really just want 1 video card.

Your Monitor Resolution: I really don't know here. 1920x1080p? right? Just want a decent screen, with decent resolution, without busting the budget. And a HDD of some sort, size doesn't matter anything more than 500gb at 7200 is fine.

Storage Preferences: Please include a 120gb ssd for windows to run off. I like samsungs ssd's but you can choose other stuff if you like.

Additional Comments: Wouldn't mind a decent look system, atleast partially color coded.
I play a variety of games, from css to farcry 3 and even some older games like apb reloaded or GTA SA etc. I am not that fussy about ULTRA high graphics but they are welcome if it stays within budget. Just really want a strong rig that can run anything I need, even if it means turning down the setting a little bit. Not into video editing so no need for anything more than 8gb ram(would preffer 2x4gb) as I can update it to 16gb later.
Kinda want a case with a window, must have good airflow and run quiet on idle. perhaps an option to turn any leds in it off for when I wanna watch movies kinda thing.

GPU Preferences: Not much of an idea, was think gtx 760 or gtx 660 ti. Not into modding skyrims graphic type stuff so don't need the 3/4gb versions of these cards. For AMD the r9 270X seems ok.. But you tell me :) Open to any GPU that can run my kinda games. However, I like the video cards with the fans on them, rather than rear exhausts.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Simply, Its time to upgrade from my first gen i7 laptop with intergrated graphics. I want to be able to atleast run games... coz this laptop can't even run alot of them above 20fps on low settings low res.

Thanks for your time. Please feel free to post questions.

-Luke

Dont get the z87 motherboard because its completely pointless. Plsu with that psu you wont be able to sli so its even more pointless. Get the h87 motherboard I recommended. Otherwise, thats a nice build, it should run battlefield 4 at high and 60 fps.

Ya reckon this is a respectable gaming machine aswell as a decent all round computer? I know I went abit over budget, but lets be honest, had I made a budget of 1700 i would be looking at a 1800 machine haha

ohh and whats the difference between h87 and z87? is it really worth saving like 20-30 bucks and missing out on all the extra whistles?

Thanks for all of your help btw man, I appreciate it.

Ok the overview of the h87 and z87 is beacuse the z87 chipset are for cpus that have a k at then end and people who want to do sli. Mostly for the cpus that have a k at the end. The h87 chipset is for people who dont want to sli or just have a low budget and are gonna go with a i5 4570 for example. So yeah go with the asrock h87 professional or overall any h87 motherboard. Now changes to your build muahhaha. SInce you have a all blue build going on, might as well change the case so its blue right, no no ok. Lol jk. Ok so for the case, I would go with the corsair 400r and if possible the 500r. They both are really nice cases and will go with the color scheme of the build. Now if you want to stick with your case, you will need to take out all the red led fans and put them somewhere else because then they will ruin the color scheme. Not a big deal but if you want it to look better. You could just sell it for really cheap

Then all I need is office, some anti virus and some adobe stuff. Really want the r9 270x for its mantle capability.
A joint near my house quoted $210 to build it with a 3 year warranty. Is it worth it in your opinion or should I build it myself? Does pcpartpicker offer warranties?

Edit: I probs wouldn't get the scout, I would just get the storm trooper with window.

Thanks.

Is there anything wrong with the scout?
Also why not the graphics card i chose? what the advantage to z87 a? or g45?

And yeh, us aussies are so stupid on how we let the market rape us, I've waited long enough for a computer though.

Note: After reading into and really thinking about it, I don't think I will ever need to overclock, I just don't think I would be comfortable with it, even if it is as safe as they say. So yeah, you reckon this could run something like bf4 in 1080p ultra? if not would it run it in high?

Thanks again man :)

So, anywho, its got all the bells and whistles I wanted and more. Its over budget but has office/antivirus etc. We talked prices a bit and they were pretty good and ended up doing all of this for 1900 flat. The built and with a warranty so I am really happy with it. Good bunch of guys aswell, there site is here and I for sure reccomend them if you're close enough. They helped me colour match and are just generally good to talk to.

So anyways, That'll be all done soon and I'll be gaming etc, so I'll keep you posted on how she performs(and upload some pics)

By the way, they are taking the red fans out and putting blue ones in, thus why they are in the build price.

Thanks guys :)

So First problem.

On the back of my video card, there is 2 like DVI slots, and 2 HDMI slots. Which do I hook my screen upto.

Second problem, where do I plug the second screen(smaller shittier screen) into? on the videocard or on the VGA port on the I/O sheild?

Third and final problem. They installed windows 7 but didnt update it. Any recommendations on how to do this? I'v heard do no more than 30 at a time, but is that true?

Thanks guys :)

Sorry amin it isnt too much of a hassle especially for adobe. If you want help with torrenting, we can talk over pm. Anyway, it doesnt matter which slot you use, you will get the same quality though i recommend hdmi. Since its a crapier monitor, just plug it in to the io shield vga port so you will use the intel graphics and not have more pressure on the gpu. No in my opinion that is not true, once I installed windows, I just updated all of them at once.

thanks dude. i cant beleive it but i have another problem. I got hyperx kingston ram, 8gb of it(2x4) and on a program like Speccy(tells info about system) it is saying the ram has cl11(shoudlnt it be cl9) and running at 799~Mhz. Does that mean I got ripped off and they gave me shit ram? or does that happen with all ram, regardless of its speed when not underload?
