I have the GA-x79-UD4 mobo w/ Pci-express(x16/x16/x8). I have 2 gtx780 set up in a dual (x16/x16). I am wondering will adding a third GTX 780 to the Pci-express x8 slot bottleneck the performance of my GPU significantly? What about pci-express x4?
An old PCIe 1.1 x4 slot would bottleneck a 780, but likely not cripple it.
Anything strong than 2.0 x8 and you're fine.
Check out the data for a Radeon 7970/ GTX 680. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Ivy_Bridge_PCI-Express_Scaling/23.html
Hopefully the next generation Maxwell cards will be significantly stronger.
x8 @ 3.0 should have almost no impact on current cards. The performance gain of a 3rd card is not as much as the the gain you got from going from a single to dual cards. Just a heads up on that.
