Hi there,

I am desperate to get help to recover the data on my failed hard drive. It has very important data which I didn't back up. Yes, I know! Most of if was backed up however but I am desperate to get back some files as those were for a professional project.
Here is what happened: I plugged the external drive as usual and suddenly, it wasn't recognise/wouldn't show up in y computer. I tried on three different computers, same result. It didn't spin at all either. So I took it out of its enclosure and plugged it through a universal drive adapter. There it started spinning but it couldn't mount on my computer asking to initialise or other options. I didn't initialise and just dismissed this. I tried to run disk warrior, it couldn't see the drive. Then I ran Data Rescue were it could see the drive and locate a few files which were from the original drive, generic files that came with the drive. However it couldn't retrieve anything else.
So I read about the encryption issues which I think might be an issue there. As a result I managed to get hold of a spare PCB with the exact same serial number hoping it would work. It didn't unfortunately . As soon as I plugged the hard drive with the new pcb, the screen on my computer went all black for a few seconds and the drive started clicking same way as with the original PCB. I am thinking could I have fried both PCBs as a result of the wrong power supply or damaged power supply? Or what else could be the issue? I would be so appreciative of your help as I am desperate.
Thank you very much

I have had this exact problem with WD MyBooks before. A couple of years ago, I had a MyBook drive that started doing exactly what you described. I contacted WD Support and they told me that my drive had liekly failed and that if I wanted the data off of it, I would have to take it to a computer store or somewhere that offers a data recovery service, as WD doesn't do that. Long story short, since I had all of my data backed up elsewhere, I didn't take it to a recovery place. I did send it into WD however, and they sent me a new one since mine was still under warranty.
