I've got a Toshiba Satellite 4000CDS with Windows 2000 Professional running on it and I was wondering if I could reset it to factory settings. The main reason why I want to do this is because, when I log onto Windows after I've typed in my password and username, A message comes up saying that the paging file is too low and that Windows will not work properly if I don't upgrade it. I then clicked on the X, closing the window, and made my way to control panel. After about 30 to 40 seconds of use, the CD drive ejects it's self. Another message then comes up saying that my privileges have been restricted, or something like that, and when I try to open up the task manager (by pressing ctrl, alt del) it gives me a few options. One is log off, the other is lock and I think there's one to change you're password, but the button that says task manager doesn't work when I press it. The onscreen mouse pointer then goes really funny and starts bouncing all around the screen. More messages appear saying that my PC is low on virtual memory and that I have to add more.
I then ended up turning the PC off by it's button (press and hold for a few seconds). That's why I would like to reset it to factory settings maybe out of windows (probably in MS-DOS or before Windows loads up) because I literally can't do anything in Windows. A video of precisely what I did can be found at: http://youtu.be/8ghAOK6qnuM
Please provide a method of what I should do because I really liked that PC!:(

Hi

Your PC May be old enough to have a floppy disk drive
If you have access to USB floppy drive you could make a boot floppy with NTFS drivers on it
(Sysinternals now part of Microsoft & others)
Or boot off a windows 2000 cd. At emergency cmd console find out how much free space on hard drive

Or if you have a USB to pata interface connect to another working PC
Western digital windows data lifeguard can check drive for physical damage

From other system you could run chkdsk on USB drive ,free up space etc
Recover any important data

Do you have the windows 2000 cd ?
If not how will you re install window

How much ram in system ?
How big is hard disk?

I doubt that laptop has a vendor-supplied restore partition, so your only hope is to get your hands on a Windows 2000 install disk. I hope you don't plan on browsing the Internet with that laptop, because the operating system is no longer supported by Microsoft and your system will get hacked pretty quickly.

The full specifications for that PC can be found at: http://www.cnet.com/laptops/toshiba-satellite-4000cds-1...

I don't have a recovery CD nor Floppy, and I lost my installation CD.

(please note that I installed Windows 2000 Professional on it and replaced the 3.8GB hard drive with a 6GB one)

Yeah, tried putting it online quite a while back (2008 I think) and I did get a virus. Luckily, this person on eBay sold me a Windows 2000 installation CD which, fortunately, installed on the poor thing. But, silly old me has lost the CD, so, as you say, my only hope is to find another one!

I don't intend to put it online again, though.
