This is my first ever question on tom's (hoping this is the right area to ask)

So I am building my first ever gaming PC and got my case, psu, cpu and mobo. So my motherboard has 4 places to put RAM and I wanna buy two 4gb sticks but my neighbor has an 8gb he's trying to sell me for 1/2 price. My only question is I've heard of Dual Channeling with RAM and it runs faster, but the videos i see on this slot 1 is one color and slot 2 is another color, then slot 3 is the same color as slot one, and slot 4 is the same color as slot 2 . My motherboard all 4 slots are black, does this mean it will not matter if I have two 4gb vs 1 8gb stick?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You! But do some motherboards not have Dual Channel ram even though they have 4 slots for RAM? Sorry, I am totally new to PC stuff and most videos I see where they talk about Dual Channel RAM the RAM slots have 2 different colors? Where mine is all black?

X58 has triple channel RAM and X79 has quad channel RAM
Z77-87 have dual channel mode

Thank You! I see your the mobo expert so one more question.
Can you also mix gb sizes? Like if slot one I had a 4gb stick, slot two an 8gb, then slot three 4gb, and four another 8gb?
Also can you put two 4gb sticks in slot 1 and 3, and just one 8gb stick in slot 2 or 4?

These may seem like dumb questions but im a complete newbie to pc building.

Thanks!

Yes you can but like SR71 Blackbird said better to install matching pairs
