Stuck "Preparing to Install"

I am unable to install ANYTHING via Windows Update or an MSI file. I've tried /unregster and /regserver, there is no InProgress registry key, nadda. When i had reinstalled my OS, windows update had worked. now there is something that must have messed it up yet again. Any advice?

Try the easy approach first. See whether you can 'Restore' the computer to an earlier known good installation. This feature will be in 'Control Panel, Backup & Restore'.
