External Hard Drive Data Visible But Not Able to be Read/Copied

I know there are dozens of similar questions posted on here, but I was having trouble locating my specific issue. I have a 2tb WD external drive with all of my school research on it. I noticed the response time on it has slowly become more sluggish over the past couple weeks, and so I've decided to do what I should have done months ago and back it up...

The issue now is that although the computer recognizes both the hard drive and all of the files within, it cannot read or copy most of the files.

Basically any time I try to copy out the largest folders, it will slow down to a stop, tell me one of the files can't be read, and ask me to proceed. This happens time and time again to the point where critical chunks of my data are missing.

I have tried various USB ports, wires, and even thrown it on a Mac to see if there was any hope, but everything turned out the same way.

Obviously my goal is to try and salvage all of this work. Because there's so much data on there, I can really only use my desktop (and new internal 2tb drive).

I know that these things are case-specific, but any advice is much appreciated.

An addendum...

I've tried changing the disk drive letter (as someone suggested on another thread) and trying to move individual files (as opposed to folders) as well... No dice.

It also does not appear to be related to file size, as tiny excel files are just as immobile as larger tiffs.
