Built a PC that is randomly freezing when videos/games are opened.

Hi, I built a PC back in October that had been running fine (buggy BF4 not withstanding) up until a week before Christmas. That day I was watching a stream that crashed and my PC froze with it. I have been ignoring it for a while now but it is just too annoying now.

The last 2 days it has been less random freezing and more immediate freezing whenever a video/game is opened. Something else to note is that I've gotten a few rendering errors in Civ 5 although I'm not sure if that is the same issue.

Troubleshooting wise I've tried updating video/sound drivers, ran memtestx86/windows memory diag, error checked my HDD a few times, downclocked my GPU, am constantly checking to see if my temps are bad but I have yet to see something bad or out of the ordinary (to my knowledge). Admittedly voltages go over my head a little so I don't know if my CPU/GPU is over/underpowered or what.

I'd appreciate any sort of help to point me in the right direction. I really don't want to go and blindly RMA components if it is a software issue for example. Thanks in advance.

Specs:
AMD FX-6300
ASRock 970 EXTREME4
PowerColor 7870 MYST (7870 xt)
Western Digital 1TB blue
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4x4GB DDR3 1600
Corsair CX500 500W
Windows 7 SP1

I originally posted the above in another forum. Since that post I've ran prime95 both normally and in safe mode which both freezes me consistently.

I've tested each stick of ram individually in memtest86 as I was told it was possibly a memory issue. Yet nothing. I still have no idea what exactly is the issue except that it likely isn't my GPU/RAM as they run fine in many benchmarks. Whoever can help me out to figure the issue will earn my eternal love.

You mentioned that the problems were associated with streaming a video. I mentioned viruses because I downloaded three trojans in exactly that manner. Have you flashed both BIOS yet?

What comes to mind now is that your problem occurs consistently with the power draw from your GPU. If your PSU is no longer putting out 500 Watts, that would cause similar problems.

Here is a trouble shooting check list.

I figured that as well and made sure to clean out all dust and apply new paste yet got the same results. I was thinking about maybe flashing my BIOS to see if that did anything.

Have you updated your anti-virus and scanned for viruses? It does kind of sound like you downloaded a virus. Have you tried using recovery? You could try repairing or reloading your OS.

Updating your BIOS is a good idea. Flash both your motherboard and your GPU. This is probably your best option.

I have tried virus scanning in safe mode. While I did find something it wasn't something really major and after removal nothing changed.
I recently tried getting a higher watt/amp PSU and also tried my old nvidia card and both resulted in it still freezing so GPU and PSU issues are 100% out.

Whats weird is that I sometimes am able to get into a game for about 10 seconds with everything rendering fine. Sometimes not even 5 seconds into loading it'll freeze.

While it would make sense if it was the PSU it likely isn't the PSU as I tried a higher powered PSU and get the same freezing. Also I flashed the BIOS a few days ago which didn't do anything noticeable.

If the test PSU that I got was also defective that would be some shitty luck.

Going to go through that FAQ to see if there is something I haven't tried.

Edit: A quick note when this freezing occurs the fans and power LED stay on like normal. The HDD activity LED goes blank.
