Graphical artifacts - GPU?

Hello there,

I've been having some persistent graphical issues with my machine, which started a month or two ago.
You can see the sort of thing I'm talking about below:

My current set-up:

H55M Foxconn mobo
Radeon 6870 GFX card
i5 740 CPU
12GB DDR3 RAM
Generic 650W PSU

These artifacts tend to develop after playing fairly intense games for a while. I can go from getting a couple of days with no issue, to only getting an hour or two. They never occur on start-up, so a restart always temporarily fixes the problem. Interestingly, I tried taking a couple of screenshots (via xfire), and the artifacts don't appear, everything looks normal.

Things I've tried:

- One of the things first suggested to me was that my monitor was on it's way out, and due to the fact I'd been intending on getting a new one anyway, I bought a new one without any testing. Alas however, it didn't solve the issue.
- I've tried updating all graphical and mobo drives, including reverting back to old drivers, no improvement.
- I've reset the mobo by removing the battery (under advice), no improvement.
- I discovered whilst investigating that my CPU was getting rather hot. I applied fresh thermal paste and replaced my heat sink (again, I intended to anyway). No improvement!
- I've installed software to monitor the temperatures of all my hardware. My CPU now rarely exceeds 50 degrees, whilst my GPU rarely exceeds 60 degrees.

I only have one PCI-E slot. so cannot switch my GFX card about. I cannot easily test my card in another machine, nor do I have another PCI-E device to test the slot.

I imagine it's coincidence, but I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7, roughly when the problems began. Like I say though, I personally don't think this is related to the issue.

I suspect my GPU is on its way out (less than 2 years old! Under warranty?), and so I'm on the verge of parting with the cash for a new one. I guess I'm looking for some support of my opinion before I do.

My PSU would be the only other thing I'd personally suspect, as it's 6 or 7 years old now. I've never however had any random shutdowns or issues of the like which I suspect I would if that was the problem.

Thank you for any help!

Darren

A generic PSU could be the problem, especially at that age as the caps do tend to wear out. One thing I would recommend is resetting your computer and running a benchmarking tool that will show if it is the GPU. With some tools you can monitor voltage to your GPU as well as temps, and if the problem is your GPU you should see them immediately. Otherwise it may be your PSU.

Thank you for your help.

By reset do you just mean restart and then monitor the voltages until the artefacts appear? I do have a program called HWMonitor, which I now run frequently and have so far not noticed anything unusual with regards to voltages. That said, I wouldn't know what I'm looking for!
Would you use a different program? If so, what observations would you expect to make if there is a dodgey GPU?
Also, by caps on the PSU, what do you mean?
Apologies, my knowlegde is quite limited!

Thanks again,

Darren
