I am windows 7 on mt 1tb HDD and I recently got a Samsung 840 EVO 500GB SSD and I was wondering if I could move my Operating System from my HDD and put it on my SSD, Thanks

Why would you even say this? Clearly one can always Clone Windows. While it may not be recommended by some it CAN be done. I have done it many times.

I recommend Reflect by Macrium since it works quite well and is free for personal use.

When all is done, I recommend using the hard drive for your personal files to save space on the SSD.

I always recommend a fresh install on a new SSD. Guaranteed to work.

However, there are various cloning applications that may do it.
But you have to do a careful analysis of current used space vs space on the new SSD. 600GB used on the current drive will not fit into a 500GB SSD.

Yes, you can move your one installation of Windows 7 from your HDD to your SDD. OEM versions, if that's what you have, is tied to the motherboard, not the hard drive. As USAFRet states, a fresh installation of Windows is best, but there are cloning applications.

Please make sure you are reading the warning above. Clearly you can not clone 600 gigs onto a 500 gigabyte drive. And you should also keep some extra space.

Clone and then remove the hard drive to ensure everything works without it before you reconnect and empty the hard drive for use as a storage drive.

If the used space on your HDD is smaller than the new SSD drive you can clone using EaseUS To Do free software. I've done it many times and always a clean result. Google it for a free download.
