Query about a fresh install?

Hey guys I'm looking to do a fresh install of windows 7 on my laptop. I want it to be completely fresh without any of the bloatware my hp came with. I have read up on how to create a bootable usb stick, which is what I intend to use.
A couple of questions I have are:
1) Is it true that I can do this fresh install using the Window serial on my laptop? If so, is the serial number written anywhere else other than the sticker on the bottom? mine's worn and you can't read any of the numbers...
2) My hard drive currently has 3 partitions on it (all designated by HP). The local disk, recovery and HP_TOOLS. If I erase all the partitions, would the laptop still work as normal? Or will it wipe everything including the windows files?

I'm doing this to have a shiny laptop (hypothetically!) and because I'm planning on selling it to fund a self build.

Thanks in advance!

There are utilities that can extract the current Windows serial, so you could do that to get the key and use it for the clean install. The one I used was call ABR it worked on Vista, http://directedge.us/content/abr-activation-backup-and-restore?page=6, but it seems to only have beta support for 7.

1 partition contains the tools to recover the PC, and the other hold the image to recover. You can wipe all partitions and reinstall, but to be honest, if I were to buy the laptop, I'd find some value in having the ability to restore to HP's factory image. If you're selling it, why do you care about the bloatware, HP doesn't have that much. You could just restore, you'd get all the drivers, and uninstall what you don't want.

You know, it never actually occurred to me that I wouldn't be using the laptop after i'd restore it... I'll just do the factory restore then. Thanks!
