when using a usb flash drive for a linux/ osx instlation drive is it possible for these files to be deleted? or is it when i do it 1 time i cant be used for normal data storage anymore?
If you format a USB for Linux, that is a different file system then a Windows PC, and Windows doesn't read other File System formats. You would need to wipe the entire thumb drive again to reuse it, or simply (in Linux) format back to either FAT or FAT32 to be accessible by a Windows machine.

You can delete the files when you are done installing form the USB drive.
