Did I lose the CPU lottery?

I've just bought a new Asus Z87-Pro and 4670K and have tried overclocking it, however to get a stable clock at 4.5Ghz I have to increase the voltage to a minimum of 1.28V for it to be stable. Would this be considered quite a 'bad' CPU? Should I send it back and hope to get a good one next time?

Thanks for your help!

What are you using for a cpu cooler? 4.5ghz is about average for a 4670k. I don't know what you were expecting.

Thanks for replying CTurbo, I have a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, which is quite a good air cooler. It's not so much the overclock, but the voltage required to get there, I think some people are getting 4.5Ghz on as little as 1.2 volts or am I wrong?

Haswell isn't that great at overclocking compared to its predecessors, odds are the people getting 4.5GHz on a lower voltage have something close to a golden sample chip. You might as well stick with what you have, even if you do get an exchange, you probably won't get a chip that is significantly better at overclocking.

1.28 volts for 4.5Ghz is pretty good. I need 1.325 to get 4.5Ghz on my 3960x. 4.5Ghz is also pretty damn good for Haswell

I know its not intel, but my 965 takes 1.525V to stay stable at 4.11GHz. I can keep its temps down, but still.

Global Foundries uses a silicon on insulator process whereas Intel uses a bulk silicon process. The SOI process is more tolerant of higher voltages, hence why the FX-9590 can get away with a stock voltage of 1.5 volts, which would absolutely destroy any Intel chip without sub zero cooling

Yeah I know that much, but for a phenom II Im not sure it was designed to take that.

The stock operating voltage for the 965 is supposedly up to 1.425 volts, so 1.525 isn't a huge stretch.

That's programmed at the factory based on measurements and the marketed parameters. Intel does the same thing, there's a fair bit of variance in what the stock voltage is
