Graphics card goes to base clock when running Youtube video.

This isn't anymore than a nuisance but it's strange to me nonetheless. I have an Asus R9 280X that came factory overclocked to 1070mhz, I usually run it at 1160mhz, however when I'm running a youtube video and playing a game at the same time it will only run at 970mhz (base clock speed) no matter what profile I'm set to. I'm using Asus GPU Tweak to OC the card, I'm sure there's better software out there but this is simple and I know it works. If anyone has an explanation for this I'd be very curious to find out what it is. Here's the gist of my setup:

Intel 4770k
MSI MPower Max
Asus R9 280x
G.Skill Ripjaw whatevers 8GB
Corsair HX750

hmmm I had a similar issue on my GTX470, if I had played a youtube video since the last reboot, i'd get 5-10 fps on BF3, if no video had been played i'd get 50-60fps. Never fixed it. Might still happen, I just don't watch you tube very often on my gaming rig.

Welcome to the AMD world of design. The card is throttling back under the load of both the video and the game. It is part of it's design and there is nothing you can do about it. When it senses a temperature rise it first spins the fan up to a predetermined max speed. If that does not drop the temp. it starts to decrease it's performance parameters until a safe temp. envelope is reached. Since you start out by overclocking you are already cutting back on the headroom of the card. So why don't you try setting it to default and see if overall performance during multitasks improves? You might read the few articles on the Tom's site that describe how your card performs. They are informative and easy to understand. Bottom line is no matter what you set the clock speeds to, the card will lower it's performance values dependent on it's temp. sensors.

I guess I forgot to include that temperatures are always stable. I run a little warmer with dual monitors but under load the GPU never exceeds 71 degrees Celsius. And just to reiterate, it doesn't matter which profile I use, whether it's the factory OC or my custom one.

That,s just the point, the card's bios software never lets it get hot. You will never see it get hot. The way it keeps it self from getting hot is to decrease its clocks. Just read about it and you will understand. AMD designed the card to throttle back its performance to control its heat. Any way the card is working as it should.

No dude, you don't understand. It only returns to its base clock when I run a youtube video, turn off youtube and it goes back to normal. It has absolutely nothing to do with temperature. I thought I made that clear in my original post.
