I would like to purchase a video card soon (this week) with a budget around or under $300.

My current system specs are an i5 2500k with only a modest OC of 3.7 GHZ, a Radeon 6970 2 GB, a 520 Watt PSU, and 8 GB of RAM. My gaming is done on a single 1080p monitor.

I'm currently becoming a little unsatisfied with my performance in some recent new games. I was thinking about upgrading my video to maybe an R9 270X? However, i'm uncertain if the increase would be significant enough to justify the cost or not as i've never seen this specific pairing on any review site and its even harder to compare performance to the 6970.

The 6970 was one of the first models using a reference cooler and it is far louder than i'd like it to be, so noise is about the my 2nd biggest concern behind performance.

What would be the best route to take? is it even worth it? Would a complete (longterm) overhaul be better?

Get a slightly better psu (evga supernova 650 are amazing and cheap) and a gtx 770 minimum, otherwise it is more of a sidegrade

Also, overclock that 2500k to at least 4.5ghz so it doesn't start to bottleneck

I also have a 2500k and I am still unsure whether to Upgrade to 4690k. What would the 2500k paired with a 770 phantom be like?

I guess it depends on what you have now. A 2500k is still relatively decent, but you might have a crappy graphics card that would make an upgrade worth it
