Hello all, i have a minor problem here.

Recently i switched out a lot of parts in my gaming computer to quiet it down so i gave it a better cpu cooler, new video card with quiet fans, stable psu with a quiet fan and removed unnecessary case fans that was loud.

Now my computer has gone completely quiet, but now another problem occured. My 2 year old hard drive is whining (The loud fans overwhelmed the sound of the whine). It's nothing big or serious, it's just a small whine that is only noticeable when the room is quiet and i don't wear a headset.

I'm 100% sure it's the hard drive since i tried to turn off my computer and unplug a component and then start the computer, whining stopped when i unplugged the power to the hard drive.

So my question is, should i be worried? Is it fixable? Should i replace it?
Thanks in Advance.

If you are worried you can check the S.M.A.R.T. status with Seagate Seatools to determine the health of the drive. Whether the drive is in good health or not you should always back up your important data. The whine is not fixable. If the drive is in bad health you should replace it, if you don't want to live with the whine you can replace it. FYI - SSD's don't make any noise.

Any kind of sound from a hard drive is not good.

I'd back up everything now while you have the chance. Call Seagate and see what they say. Any time I've had to deal with them about HDD sounds they've just sent me new ones.

I downloaded SeaTools from Seagates website.
I run a S.M.A.R.T scan. It said "pass" with a green font which i guess is good.
But i'll give seagate a call anyway.

But i will take precations then in case it fail.
I have kept an eye on the SSD market, prices have dropped much the last year so i guess i will buy an SSD or 2. or 1 ssd and 1 hdd.

Thanks for all the answers.

A slight whirring is perfectly normal, as is a slight thumping/clacking while accessing the drive. The spindle is spinning at 5400-10000rpm (this does not happen silently). The thump/clack is just the head carriage moving back and forth. Normally these sounds are masked by all the other noises produced by your system.
