Hey y'all, I havent done much PC research since 2008 when i built my current rig. But I started again today. I've been reading that my mobo can support AM3 CPU's if you upgrade bios
CPU Support list:
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/list.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=M3A78-T&p=1

I'm wondering if I will be able to use the full power of a newer CPU? If I wouldn't have to build a whole new system and just upgrade my CPU and video card that would be pretty sweet. I'm also worried about buying a new video card and having a bottle neck scenario.

Current rig:
CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9950 Black edition
Mobo: Asus M3A78-T
GPU: Radeon HD 4870 (sometimes defective)
RAM: 2 x 2GB Corsair PC2-6400 (400 MHz according to CPU-z)

PSU: 750w

From what I've noticed I'm going to have to buy a used CPU, but I'm ok with that i suppose. What CPU/GPU combos would you guys suggest? Any help a greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Patrick

Solution
AMD Phenom II X4 945 3 GHz Quad-Core gives about a 20% higher score for CPU benchmark. I can't say if you would see much difference from your current CPU.

CPU-Z Dram Frequency of 400MHz is Double Data Rate 800MHz. (DDR)

Also, I'm still running Vista 64 and my monitor is an old school 17inch Hyundai with max/native resolution @ 1280 x 1024. So, I'm not planning on going all 1080p anytime soon.
