Memory Size Question

I just had a quick question, but the question determines which type of RAM I'll end up buying.

I'll make this question simple, as well, so that I don't show my obvious lack of understanding by screwing up some basic term. :p

Which is better?
4 * 4GB RAM or
2 * 8GB RAM

Both sets lead up to the 16GB range that I want, but which should I go with?

  1. Best answer
What CPU or motherboard do you have?
  2. If you are sure that you want 16 GB, two 8GB sticks of RAM will leave you the option of adding more RAM later. But it is probably the more expensive route. I personally bought 2 x 4GB of RAM (G. Skill Ripjaws 1866 CL9), and then added another set of 2 x 4GB later(it was on sale).
