Hello,

I'm going to test some new BIOS in order to enable overclocking, and I want to first know that I'll be able to revert to my current BIOS. I have backed it up according to: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/39588-The-AMIBIOS-Repository

Say for instance, I want to be able to revert to the backed up BIOS (backed up via Universal BIOS Backup Toolkit 2.0). The backup file was saved as AMI.ROM on a CD-R. How would I revert to the BIOS saved on this 'AMI.ROM'? Does it have to be renamed? Saved onto a difference storage medium?

Thank you

If you have used the manufacturers own flash application to do the backup, either from usb/fdd or within the bios, then reverting back is the same as flashing the a new bios, just ensure you clear the cmos after each flash. Filename is normally the bios version/date or whatever you want to call it.

Be aware, that any flashing runs the risk of bricking a motherboard.

Hello das_stig,

Could you please explain in detail step by step? I will be flashing an AMI BIOS revision to what I assume to be an AMI motherboard (I "assume" because Gateway did not specify, yet supplies clients of the FX6800 desktop series tools of AMI BIOS flashing). Here is a link for proof: http://support.gateway.com/product/?cmpid=supportnav Although you only see one BIOS revision on Gateway's support area for my particular motherboard, all the BIOS revisions prior (which have been taken down for whatever reason) have been done through Windows. I've never done this old-fashioned method before, and do not have on-hand professional help available. I'd rather not flash inside Windows using AFUWIN. I've never done a proper BIOS backup except through having data backups and restore points. The only image flashing I've done to a CD was the memtest68 ISO file.

That revision through Gateway is merely an example of a BIOS provided, but is not the BIOS I am planning to use. THIS is the BIOS I am planning to use, but the authors are unresponsive to any of my questions regarding it: http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Gateway-FX6800?page=5 The link is one of the first posts at the top of that page. As far as I know, there is no other way to enable overclocking on my board (TBGM01 as provided in the FX6800-01e desktop setup from Gateway)

I have not read about anyone who's been successful overclocking with this board, using anything like an unlocked BIOS shared on that bios-mods forums, so this whole process is slightly nerve racking.

If successful, I plan to look to these guides on overclocking (just to let you know I've done some homework):

I have a hunch that some of you oldschoolers have done this before; please show some love. I've read a bunch of ancient "guides", and I still do not understand it enough to say I can do it properly. I don't want to risk trial and error with a wrong BIOS backup. I only have one x58 motherboard, and don't want to fork out $125+ for a used motherboard to fall back on that's seen a few years of use from Joe Shmoe - only to use it for two more years MAX until upgrading to Haswell.
