so I am a noob when it comes to these things. I currently using a gtx 560ti which has served it's time well, but I would really like to get a gigabyte gtx 770 2GB without needing to spend anymore money than is necessary. I just don't know enough even after a ton of research whether or not my current rig will support it with no further ups needed.

here are my system specs:

MoBo: asus M4A87TD EVO
Processor: AMD Phenom II x4 955 3.2ghz
RAM: 8GB
PSU: Antec TP-650
HD: Samsung HD502HJ ATA 500GB
Cooler Master Gemini II S

I'm thinking I should be fine but I just want to make sure from some of you knowledgeable chaps first. thx

Solution
If you're unhappy with the performance gain you get with a 760/770, then you could start planning for a new CPU and mobo down the line, if you're happy with it then you could just stay with it (maybe with an overclock if needed)

Your CPU is fairly close in performance to an FX 4300 so it's still quite decent for gaming nowadays, heavily modded Skyrim takes a big bite out of most systems anyway so you'll probably have to test around yourself

thx for the reply. so, would overclocking the CPU (I have no clue how or whether or not it is safe) justify buying the card or should I just get a gtx 760 instead since it is cheaper and less 'beastly'?

Not really, you'd definitely be better off with a 760 if you're not going to get a new CPU and mobo in the next few months or so

In games such as MMOs and Skyrim, you're not going to be better off by much since your CPU won't handle those games as well as Intel chips with powerful single threaded performance, but for most other games you should still see some decent improvements with a 760

well dang. I love me some Skyrim and my 560ti has been handling it like a boss aside from some FPS issues here and there with all the texture mods I have installed. but it is totally playable. I didn't realize my CPU was so far out of date with modern games. it's about 3yrs old, so that makes sense I guess. ughh....

well, thank you for your help! I guess I'll need to start looking into a new mobo and cpu, dangit.

Yeah If you intend on upgrading your CPU/mobo, then the 770 might be a better longer term purchase.

yeah true. I may just do that as I can't really afford anything else right now. was really hoping my components were still somewhat relevant enough to just upgrade the GPU and be done with it. glad I did some research and asked around first. you have been a huge help, thank you.
