Hi guys,
I am trying to set up a server for a friend of mine. This is going to be a work server that is mainly being used to store files. It already has windows installed 2012. I have it configured for the desktop remote connection already. But, my friend does not want that. The only other way that I know of is VPN. Is this correct? How do I go about connecting a desktop vpn style to the server?
Thank you so much in advance

I'm confused what you are trying to do. If you want to set up network storage, just create shared folders and assign user permissions. From the individual computers on the network you just navigate the "Network" or use Mapped Network Drives to connect to shared folders as necessary.

Remote Desktop is just a means of using the built-in remote desktop application in Windows to have access to the desktop of that server to configure settings, install features, applications, etc. It's mainly meant for maintenance and administration not to actually be used to get access to shared files.

I think using a dedicated shared server will work for the best. I personally dont think that you will need virtual private server.
