My desktop is somewhat dated, most components are dated and used pretty well. These are my specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 (half year old), used to have an Athlon before.
RAM: 6,00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 669MHz
MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. GA-MA785GMT-UD2H
GPU: Gigabyte 1024MB GeForce GTS 250
PSU: Codegen 500W (watt)
FAN: Coolermaster 120mm

Well, i used to have a problem that i couldn't play heavier games (that my desktop should handle), like Bad Company 2 and GTA 4. for more than 15 minutes, after that the monitor just went inactive (black screen error). That problem occured to me this year, before that i never had any problems. I
I fixed that issue by lowering my resolution (1600x900 to 1280x720)
But after playing Bad Company 2 for a while my desktop started smelling bad, i turned it off and screwed it open, but no visible damage was seen, the smell came from my PSU.
Cleaned my deskop after the incident but im scared to play games after that, scared to fry my system.

Cliffs:
- Can't play games at 1600x900 while my system should be able to handle them
- Turned down resolution to 1280x720, no problems with inactive monitor
- Desktop started smelling bad after awhile
- Smell comes from PSU but i cant see any damage
- Cleaned desktop but afraid to play games

Any ideas? Help would be great :)

Replace your PSU with the highest wattage QUALITY PSU you can afford. I try never to load my PSUs past 50% of rated wattage.
