SSD as secondary drive

Hello, currently I have a 1TB 5400 HDD in my laptop. I want to purchase a 60GB SDD to put in my secondary drive slot just for gaming. My computer has really long loading times on some sections of my games that I would like to speed up. (ie: switching zones)

Would I see a noticeable improvement by doing this? I don't want to put the OS on an SSD since the size I need would not be feasible from a cost perspective.

I know that the HP M7s use SATA IIIs on both ports so you'll be fine there. A 120Gb drive should be good for several games. Some games like BF4 and COD will have dramatically quicker load times with an SSD. Personally I'm using a 256Gb drive on mine and that works for both OS and games. As a side note you may want to invest in a removable caddy so you can switch between the SSD and DVD drive if needed.

Depending on your usage I would suggest using a 60GB ssd as the OS drive. 60Gb isn't going to fit much in the way of games, 3 maybe 4 modern max (don't forget you should keep at least 15% ~10Gb free). Depending on the laptop model, which would be useful, the secondary port is likely to have slower speeds than the primary. Depending on the game you may not see a speedup either. You mentioned moving between zones this implies something like Skyrim that doesn't see a dramatic improvement in load times. You'll get a bigger bang by using it as the OS drive, quick boots, no need for hibernation.

My Laptop is an HP Envy M7-J078CA if that helps.

I could put a 120gig drive in, but I'm not sure that would be enough for my games and the OS ?

Ok so I'll go with the 120gb. Since they are both fast ports then I should see an increase in load times using an SSD and leaving my OS on the 5400 1tb? I play Bf4 and it runs smoothly, my problems are with Star Wars the old republic mmo, so much loading between sections and it takes forever sometimes. Once it all loads up I play on Max graphics and it smooth. Just has trouble sometimes if I travel in one direction too long. U see the hdd light going crazy.
