So next year I will be going to university for computer engineering. I will have the option of:
a) bringing my desktop rig and a macbook air that I have lying around my house
b) MBA and using the lab computers
c) buying a powerful laptop

I'm thinking of a) since I feel that I'm more comfortable with my own desktop, but from your experiences should I just use the lab computers? I'm kind of disgusted by them because of the though of how many people put their greasy fingers on it and if it's more powerful than my machine
Specs:
Intel i5 4670K
Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H
8GB Gskill RAM
MSI GTX 760

From my perspective most university PCs are either pre built Dell / Apples or they generally go with whatever the cheapest thing they can get their hands on is. You won't find X79 or Z87 in most university labs. You'll find PCs that are usually about 5 - 6 years out of date, and the ones that are new usually are the cheapest ones they can get. They're not interested in performance, they're interested in that scary accounting term called "bottom line".

Bring your desktop or you could even put your components into an SFF build - you will not be disappointed. And you will not have to worry about bottom lines or profit margins.

There are almost no Laptops that have equal performance to a 760. ANd he won't have to waste money. A) is the best choice there.

What's an SFF build?

SFF = small form factor. Like a Bitfenix Prodigy or a Cooler Master Elite 120.
